exploring
theta waves

COMPOSER, ambient artist & W i d e r founder coco francavilla presents “Exploring theta waves”:
a binaural beats meditative sound session with modular synths and vibro-acoustic instruments.
Through Binaural Beats we’ll be exploring stimulation of Theta Brain Waves, associated with deep relaxation, meditation, creativity and intuitive awareness.

theta waves
& BINAuRAL BEATS

Theta Waves are one of five different types of brainwaves that occur naturally in humans and are associated with deep relaxation, enhanced creativity, improved focus and concentration, as well as greater access to intuition and inner guidance.
In the EXPLORING THETA WAVES session we’ll be tapping into these powerful states by using sound frequencies specifically tuned to induce a theta state. To understand better how binaural beats entrainment works we need to talk about human brainwaves.
The human brain generates electromagnetic waves even when we are asleep.
They are the result of electrochemical processes that occur in the brain to transmit information.
(We can “measure” our brainwaves activity with a EEG Electroencephalography a non-invasive test that measures the electrical activity of the brain using electrodes attached to the scalp)
There are several types of brain waves, each associated with different mental states.

DELTA: 1-4 Hz
Delta is the lowest frequency state, and it’s linked to Deep Sleep / Healing, Pain Relief, Cortisol Reduction / Access to the uncoscious mind

THETA : 4-8 Hz.
Theta is a slow brain-wave associate with Meditation / Deep relaxation / Creativity

ALPHA: 8-14 Hz.
When we are in an alpha state of mind, our brain is focused and productive. Alpha Waves are linked to Reduce Stress Maintain positive thinking / Increase learning capabilities / Easily engage in activities and the environment because we are in a state of flow

BETA: 14-30 Hz.
Beta is a higher frequency brainwave and helps in: Keeping attention focused /Analytical thinking / Solving problems / Stimulating energy and action High-level cognition

GAMMA: 30-100 Hz.
With a higher frequency than beta, these brain waves help in Increased cognitive enhancement Attention to detail, helping in memory recall

So when our brain is producing theta waves, we  may experience feelings of calm and peace, as well as creativity and intuition.
This state can be induced by activities such as meditation, mindfulness practices, and deep breathing.

Binaural Beats is one of the technology that can be used to help induce theta waves by entraining the brain to produce this type of brain wave pattern.

The science behind binaural beats occurs naturally in the brain.
A Binaural Beat is a frequency that is created by the brain after hearing two slightly different frequencies - one of which is sent to the left ear and the other to the right ear.
Upon hearing the two tones (frequencies) simultaneously on headphones, the brain then attempts to reconcile both tones, by creating a new third frequency, termed Binaural Beat, which is heard as a rhythmic pulsation (in this case created by Coco thru Modular Synths Oscillators).
For example, if a frequency of 200 Hz is played into your left ear, and a frequency of 205 Hz is played into your right ear, our brain “hears” a third frequency pulsing at 5 Hz, which is the mathematical difference between the two frequencies.
The brain then follows along at this frequency and produces brainwaves of the same frequency. This theory is known as ‘Frequency Following Response' (FFR); a naturally occurring science that happens in the human brain.
Entraining the brain through sound isn't just a modern trend. It is something that has been part of human societies for centuries.
Research has shown that when a person listens to Binaural Beats for a recommended time, their levels of arousal change and the effect varies according to the frequency pattern used.
Theta Waves frequencies range between 4Hz to 7Hz (so a Slow frequency pulsation); therefore - for example - a 5 Hertz tone is in the Theta State, which is a state generally associated deep relaxation, meditation, creativity and heightened intuition.
Theta Waves also play a roll in the early stages of sleep.
There are numerous studies that show how Theta Waves positively impact our psychological well-being – think lower stress levels, clearer thinking, an enhanced creative mind and much more.

In Coco’s live performance Binaural Beats are laid underneath ambient sounds and dreamy ethereal melodies played with Modular Synths and vibroacoustics instruments : when the audience listens through headphones, the brain is encouraged to follow and produce more Theta Brainwaves and therefore to enter into a relaxing dream-state.

  • Although the creation of binaural beats music has only been possible through technological advancement in the last 100 or so years, the use of this type of sound therapy dates back thousands of years.

Ancient cultures were aware of how the brain could be entrained through sound repetition long before modern science was able to prove the process.

History notes many examples of music used as medicine and therapy:

    1. The ancient Greeks used music to ease stress, promote sleep, and soothe pain.

    2. The Native Americans and Africans used singing and chanting as part of their healing rituals.

    3. Even in language we see a connection between healing and music. For example, the Chinese character for medicine includes the character for music (1).

Of course, in times past, societies didn't refer to music therapy, binaural beats, or brainwave entrainment of any kind. But what they did know was that sound had powerful healing properties.

  • Interestingly, scientist Melinda Maxfield, PhD, conducted research on the drumbeats used during rituals of ancient cultures and found that they generally beat at a steady rate of 4.5 beats per second.

This consistent beat induced a trance-like state for the tribe, due to the brain following along at a 4.5 beats-per-second brainwave frequency, which is a low Theta brainwave state, as you'll learn about later on.

Indeed, in almost every ancient culture, repetitive beat formats have played an important role in wellbeing and prosperity.

For example: through the use of repetitive drumming and chanting, Tibetan monks, Native American shamans, Hindu healers, and master Yogis have been able to induce specific states of being for meditation, transcending consciousness, and healing.

Binaural beats provide benefits in the same way, helping with deeper meditation, stress release, reduced anxiety, improved focus, better sleep, and more.

  • Heinrich Willhelm Dove

The way in which binaural beats work was first discovered in 1839, by a Prussian physicist and meteorologist named Heinrich Wilhelm Dove.

Dove was a keen experimenter, and it was one of his experiments that would pave the way for exploration in the field of brainwave entrainment.

Of course, headphones weren’t available back then, so Dove conducted the following experiment to make his discovery:

Dove had his subject stand in a room. Then, on one side of the room he placed a tuning fork. The fork was connected to a tube that ran to the subject's ear.

Dove then placed a tuning fork on the other side of the room and ran a tube to the other ear.

The forks didn't vibrate at quite the same low frequency, so the subject received different frequencies to the right and left ears.

Dove documented that his subject perceived the effect of the two frequencies combining as a slow beat. We now know this to be the same theory behind the binaural beats phenomena.

    Dr. Gerald Oster

Dove made the discovery but didn't connect all the dots.

Indeed, it wasn't until 1973 that biophysicist Doctor Gerald Oster brought binaural beats into mainstream awareness in a paper called ‘Auditory Beats in the Brain' (Scientific American, 1973).

Oster's paper tied-together the different aspects of research that had taken place since Dove's discovery. He gave the subject renewed relevance to modern scientific questions regarding how sound might aid impairments.

Central to his thesis, and indeed what sparked renewed interest and research into how binaural beats might help with modern day afflictions such as anxiety, insomnia, pain issues, and memory problems, was that binaural beats involve different neural pathways than conventional hearing, and that listening evokes specific neural responses.

50 years on and lots of research by scientists and music researchers later, Binaural Beats (brainwave entrainment) Music is used by people all over the world to assist in stress and anxiety relief, help with concentration and memory issues, improve sleep, and provide pain relief.

  • The word binaural means “having or relating to two ears”. This represents the process, which works by simultaneously sending a different sound frequency to each ear through headphones.

The entrainment happens inside the brain and is caused by a physiological response.

Upon hearing two tones of different frequencies – sent simultaneously to the left and right ears – the brain perceives a new tone, or third tone, as some refer to it, based on the mathematical difference between the two frequencies.

The brain then follows along at the new frequency and produces brainwaves at the same rate of Hertz (Hz), thus becoming “entrained” to that frequency.

Hertz (Hz) is the way we measure a cycle of sound. 1 Hertz means one vibration cycle per second

For example: If a 200 Hz sound frequency is sent to the left ear, and a 205 Hz frequency to the right ear, the brain will perceive a new frequency at 5 Hz – the difference between the two.

The brain then follows along at the new frequency (5 Hz), producing brainwaves at the same rate of Hertz (Hz). The technical term for this process is ‘Frequency Following Response'.

The brain will only respond in the intended way if it receives the sound frequencies at the same time through headphones.

EXPLORING THETA WAVES by Coco Francavilla is created by the use of modular synths and resonating vibroacoustic instruments (Tibetan singing bowls, Chrystal Pyramids, Hand-pans and/or similar). The performance takes place in an intimate setting with the use of wireless headphones so the audience is able to hear the Binaural Beats stimulation and experience the brainwave entrainment.
The session last about 60mins/90mins

  • 10/15 minutes SET UP: the audience collect the headphones and take place in a comfortable position (laying down or sitting on the floor)

  • 10 mins - TALK: Coco makes an introduction to Binaural Beats and Brainwave entrainment

  • 40/50 mins - PERFORMANCE “Exploring Theta Waves

  • 10/15 mins - WAKING: slowly waking, sharing the experience, networking / Q&A and collecting of headphones
